Dr. James ShapleighClemson University微生物学系获得学士学位,University of Georgia微生物系获得博士学位。主要从事微生物反硝化过程,即氮氧化物呼吸过程研究,尤其在环境改变或胁迫下反硝化微生物生理生态应对策略方面的研究颇具特色。截止目前,已在PNAS, J. Bacteriology, Environ. Microbiol. 等期刊发表论文60余篇。

报告内容摘要:

Human intervention has doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen added to soils in the last hundred years. This has seriously disrupted the biogeochemical flow of nitrogen leading to serious pollution problems such as eutrophication of freshwater and marine ecosystems, contamination of nitrate in drinking water and increased greenhouse gas production. An important means of removing reactive nitrogen species is denitrification but much is uncertain about how microbial communities in soil respond to changes in nitrate and other environmental factors. In this seminar I will describe our recent work studying what environmental factors determine the type and distribution of denitrification genes in soils and how this informs our understanding of nitrogen biogeochemistry.
